Family Apple Tree
Materials:
- Brown poster board
- Apple cutouts
- Glue
- Markers
- Cut out a tree and branches shape form the poster board. Give each child a tree and have them select an apple for everyone living in their home (pets included). Encourage your children to decorate each apple to represent the family member. Glue the apples to the tree. After the trees are complete compare them and discuss who makes up each family.
Family Puppets
Materials:
- Multicultural colored paper
- Glue
- Yarn
- Markers
- Fabric pieces
- ribbon
- Popsicle sticks
- Before the children arrive at school cut out the paper into gingerbread man shapes (small, medium, and large). Have your children decorate the gingerbread men to represent members of their family. After the puppets are dry you can have a class puppet show.
Family Collages
Materials:
- Magazines (parenting magazines are great)
- Glue
- Construction paper
- Safety Scissors
- Encourage your children to go through magazines and cut or tear out pictures to represent everyone in their family. After they have glued the pictures on, ask your children to name the family members and label under each pictures.
My Family is Special
Materials:
- Construction paper
- Glue
- 18” long construction paper rectangle
- Trace and cut out each child’s handprints. Attach one handprint to each side of the rectangle. Write on the are (rectangle) part “My family is special because…” have the children dictate their answers to you and write it down..
Family Portrait
Materials:
- Large white paper plates
- Yarn
- Crayons and markers
- Let the children create a picture of their family on the inside of the plate. Then put holes in the sides of the plate and thread the yarn through it. Now you can hang the family portraits on the wall
